Appletree Careline's oldest customer turns 107

Irene 107 ATC Careline Irene Taylor, from New Milton, is our most senior Appletree Careline community alarm customer having just celebrated her 107th birthday in January.

The centenarian great-grandmother was born in the year the Titanic went down, when George V was King, and at a time when life expectancy was just 51 years.  Fast forward more than ten decades and Irene stills lives in her own home with the reassurance of a community alarm from Appletree Careline.

Valerie, one of Irene's daughters, says that Appletree Careline gives her and her family peace of mind, and means her mum can continue to live independently in her own home.

Irene was born in Camden Town, the eldest of six siblings. In her childhood, Irene was knocked over and injured in the street by a horse and cart at a time when motorised vehicles were few and far between. Her first job was as an 'armature winder' - an artisan responsible for the repair, reconditioning, or construction of wire armature coils for transformers, electric motors and generators. She later started her own business as an agent for Exide batteries at a time when it was difficult to find employees who would work for a woman, and she went on to become President of the Bromley Chamber of Commerce.

Irene has two daughters, Valerie and Barbara, who are now in their 80s. Irene recounts nights that the family spent in the air raid shelter in their garden in Kent, listening to the Battle of Britain aircraft leaving the airfield at Biggin Hill to cross the English Channel, "Sometimes the pilots would wave to us, seems unbelievable now".

Irene has three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She still has a love of dancing, which sadly she is no longer able to do, but she still has her hair done at home every fortnight by a local New Milton salon.

Appletree Careline has more than 1,800 customers, eight of them are 100 years of age or more, and another thirteen will turn 100 this year. A community alarm from  Appletree Careline allows people to live independently, offering peace of mind knowing that help is at hand at the touch of a button. Fully trained staff are available to answer calls 24 hours a day, all through the year. Customers are treated with dignity and respect, from initial contact to home installations and monitoring emergency calls, to help them feel safe and secure.
